Security Deposit Return – Sample Letter

This letter applies to residents within the city of Chicago only who are covered under the Residential Landlord Tenant Ordinance (RLTO). Please see the Exceptions to the RLTO to ensure the law applies to you.

  • The Chicago Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance (“RLTO”) does not require a written notice to the former landlord, although providing such a notice is clearly helpful. This is especially so if the tenant or former-tenant did not leave a forwarding address.
