Last updated: October 25, 2026 – 8:57 AM

As temperatures drop, a broken furnace can quickly become a health and safety crisis. If you own and live in your home, the Emergency Heating Repair Program (EHRP) may be able to help.

EHRP provides direct assistance to owner-occupants of 1- to 4-unit properties who need emergency heating system repairs or replacements during the winter season. Qualified contractors complete all work at no cost to the homeowner.

A Note for Tenants

EHRP serves owner-occupants only, so tenants cannot apply directly. If you rent and your landlord is not providing adequate heat, you have rights under Chicago’s heat ordinance. Contact our hotline at (773) 292-4988 if you have questions or are experiencing heating issues with your landlord.
