The City of Chicago is finally taking action to preserve single room occupancy (SRO) buildings, which are often the housing of last resort for the city’s most vulnerable residents. But developer Mark Fishman, a notorious Logan Square landlord who wants to buy the Milshire Hotel, refuses to meet with our community to explain his plan for the building. Instead, he’s issued 30-day notices and threatened eviction as tenants grapple with egregious living conditions. The list of building violations is eye-opening. “This is the worse case of bed bug infestation I’ve seen in fifteen years of doing inspections,” said DOB inspector J Skala. Chicago has lost 30 SRO buildings since 2009; the Milshire is one of only 73 licensed SROs left in the city. These affordable housing options need to be protected and preserved! Last month, you helped us pack city hall to encourage the passage of the SRO Moratorium. This month, help us keep the pressure up on both the developers eyeing these affordable buildings and the City Council that can protect them. Rally with us this Thursday in Logan Square!
WHAT: Rally to rehab the Milshire as quality affordable housing!
WHEN: Thursday, August 21, 6PM
WHERE: Across from the Milshire Hotel (2525 N Milwaukee)

With your continued support, we are confident that a long-term solution will be reached, and SRO’s in Chicago will receive the much-needed protection they deserve. Please print and distribute flyers (above) and invite your neighbors to join us this Thursday. A Logan Square without affordable housing options is a Logan Square for some. What we need is a Logan Square For All, a Chicago For All! For more information, please call John at LSNA, 773-384-4370.
