Giving Tuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back. On December 2nd, people around the world will come together to celebrate generosity and to give. Here in Illinois, we’ve set one bold goal: $12 million raised by IL nonprofits from 100,000 individual donors – all in one day!
What does my donation do for renters?
Your donation means more Chicago tenants spending the holidays at home instead of on the streets. MTO uses your dollars strategically to ensure that renters in Chicago have a voice in the decisions that affect the affordability and availability of safe, decent and accessible housing. Since 1985, we’ve been educating, empowering, and organizing tenants to improve and preserve affordable housing in Chicago. Just last week, our organizers helped tenants of a Pilsen apartment building win a one-month reprieve from a court order to vacate the premises due to hazardous conditions created by their landlord. These are the tangible victories that result from your support!
Our free Tenants Rights Hotline serves tens of thousands of renters each year. Our small staff of 10 is supported by an amazing team of volunteers and interns. Training volunteers and staffing our free Renters Rights Hotline is a critical piece of our work. For many Chicago tenants, it is the last line of defense against homelessness.
Your support helps ensure that we are here when tenants need us most. From lockouts and illegal evictions to bed bugs and unsafe conditions, we help tenants tackle whatever problems they face, and we couldn’t do it without you. Your support ensures that our hotline is always staffed. Support the movement to make housing a human right!
